Living in NYC itself is an addiction. You can have anything you want at any time. Before technology stole our vinyl, there used to be records stores all around the city. I remember waking up on Saturday’s and starting my day in the Village at Discorama. I would then walk across to Vinylmania, race to Eightball, run to Rock & Soul, stagger to Satellite and end up exhausted at Dance Tracks. Ironically, I was bored to tears with House music by the time I arrived there.
Dance Tracks used to have a nice little wall dedicated to albums containing great re-released and re-mastered vintage music with labels like Soul Jazz Records, Strut, Harmless, BBE, etc. Curious, I started to listen to a lot of these albums because the covers reminded me so much of what my dad used to play. Although I already had a small collection of this great music, it was there that I began to dig a little deeper into the various sounds of afro beat, latin, boogaloo, breaks, funk, and soul. Not to take away from the other stores because they also had a similar inventory, but I think it was the environment and sitting in the pleather couches at Dance Tracks that allowed me to relax, read and let everything sink in.
Starting to get a little more familiar with the sounds, I started to search out venues where I could hear amazing soul, funk, psychedelic rock and rare groove classics. There was only once place for me and it was called APT.
Below is a little blend dedicated to the human race and inspired by our new President, Barack Obama. I would also like to thank Kenny Dope, Keb Darge, Spinna, Danny Krivit, Gilles Peterson, Citizen Kane, Norman Jay, Dr. Bob Jones, Jazzy Jeff, Rich Medina Fitzroy 'Da Buzz Boy', DJ Muro, Kon, Amir, Bobbito Garcia, Stretch Armstrong and Wax Poetics for inspiring me to open my ears to another world of beautiful dance music.
